Tim Cook Talks About 25-Year Plan from MBA and Long-Term Planning Challenges

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, shared his experience of planning 25 years ago when he was an MBA student and the challenges of long-term planning in a constantly changing world. He encouraged everyone to have a "North Star" as a guide in life, but to be flexible, adaptable, and find their own path.

Tim Cook spoke with students and alumni during his 25th reunion.

"Explore everything, push the boundaries of your mind, just get on that roller coaster of continuous learning and see what happens."

This was one of the pieces of advice that Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, shared with students at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business on April 26. Cook returned to the university for a one-hour conversation with Bill Boulding, Fuqua's dean, and over 450 students who were excited to hear from the leader of the world's most profitable company.

Cook has embarked on a very different career path since graduating from Fuqua's Executive MBA evening program in 1988. "For me, that path was not predictable at all. You have to find your own North Star and stay true to your North Star."

As over 450 MBA students prepared to graduate, Cook advised them to heed Abraham Lincoln's wise words: "I will prepare myself and one day my chance will come."

Cook shared three key leadership principles at Apple: people, strategy, and execution. "If you get those three things right, the world is a great place."
