Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Chinese Language Unit, and overall supervision of the Chief of CDSS, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions:
- Contributes to the maintenance of the central multilingual terminology database UNTERM by researching relevant UN documents and external sources for official titles of interest to translators and other language staff.
- Enters and corrects information in the terminology database, in English and Chinese, under the supervision of the terminologists.
- In consultation with terminologists and translation services, researches official language versions of titles and acronyms of organs, meetings, treaties, specialized agencies, international organizations, programmes and non-governmental organizations, ascertains their accuracy and enters the information into the database.
- Participates in terminology research projects on specialized topics.
- Identifies and retrieves relevant documents from the United Nations Official Document System (ODS) and searches and retrieves information from the Internet as required.
- Independently provides terminology and reference assistance to translators and other language staff, contacting other UN offices and Permanent Missions as necessary
- In consultation with the terminologists, responds to terminology queries from within and outside the Secretariat, including Specialized Agencies, international organizations, Permanent Missions, non-governmental organizations, universities and the media, researching, identifying and transmitting the appropriate information in relevant languages.
- Maintains a log and compiles monthly and yearly statistics of queries received through email, phone, UNTERM feedback mechanism or in person.
- Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.
- Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.
- Perform other related work as required.

Education
- High school diploma or equivalent is required. A first-level university degree may be accepted in lieu of two years of required experience.
Work Experience
- A minimum of seven years (or five years if graduated with a first-level university degree) of progressively responsible experience in organizing and researching documentation for reference and/or filing purposes or in translation, language teaching or language-related areas, is required. Experience with documentation workflow processes and tools, such as gText or similar tool, is desirable. Experience in the United Nations Common System or international organizations is desirable. 1 year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
