Flexible Pathway to a PhD
The MPhil can be a direct stepping stone to a doctoral program or a career in advanced research. You can customise your project and training to align with your goals.
No Tuition Fees for Domestic Students
For Australian and New Zealand citizens and permanent residents, the MPhil is tuition-free—making it a cost-effective way to build your research credentials.
Research Across Any Faculty
With supervisors available in every faculty, you have genuine freedom to explore topics that interest you, whether they’re technical, creative, or policy-focused.
QUT’s Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a two-year full-time research degree (or four years part-time for domestic students). You’ll conduct in-depth, independent research on a topic you propose, with guidance from an experienced academic supervisor. The program is offered across all faculties—including business, engineering, health, science, arts, and law—or you can follow a more general route to match your background and research interests.
Students complete a research skills audit, which helps shape any additional training or coursework needed to strengthen your research capabilities and career prospects.
Advanced Research Expertise
You’ll complete a thesis-based research project and develop strong research skills, including through the required unit in Information Research Skills (AIRS). This prepares you for further research, PhD study, or roles in R&D.
Personalised Supervision & Support
You’ll work one-on-one with an expert supervisor and, where relevant, industry mentors—receiving tailored guidance that supports high-quality research output.
Interdisciplinary Community
Join a research community that spans different disciplines and approaches, giving you the chance to learn diverse research methods and connect with scholars from multiple fields.
