BIS Hanoi is seeking a suitable candidate to become a part of our team as a Secondary Teaching Assistant (1:1 Support). You will collaborate with the class teacher to support the delivery of excellent education and care to students aged 11-18. This position involves giving individual support to a student who has special/additional learning/developmental needs. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching & Learning • Build a positive relationship with students and interact with them according to their unique needs, acting as a positive role model and maintaining high standards. • All communication must be conducted in English. • Encourage students to think critically while acknowledging their limits. • Apply strategies from the students' IEPs and focus on goals. • Give teachers feedback on student success, progress, and challenges. • Promote good student behaviour, quickly address conflicts and incidents, and report them according to school rules. • Encourage students to try on their own first, then provide hints, then clues, then show what is expected, and then correct them if they still don’t understand. • Don't accept "I don’t know"—use the "I don’t know" approach to assist them. The Environment • Establish classroom settings that are secure and support student learning. • Help students gather all their materials after a lesson has finished. • Encourage a “plan for two.” Pastoral Care • Manage student behaviour well in the classroom and handle behavioral issues appropriately, making sure all students are safe and that accidents are kept to a minimum. • Build positive and effective relationships with students: be fair and consistent; avoid making negative remarks to students. • Support students who are upset or emotional in a suitable way. • Improve student self-esteem: treat all students equally; use positive comments; encourage independence as appropriate for their age and maturity. • You may be required to support students during lunchtime (rare in secondary). • Watch for any indications of mistreatment, emotional or physical abuse, or neglect at home or from peers and report them using the school's safeguarding procedures. Support for the Teacher • Learn about each subject in the curriculum. Read the teacher’s lesson plans, syllabus, curriculum books, etc. Your role is to help the student, not to do their work for them. • Provide regular feedback to teachers on student progress, accomplishments, and difficulties. • Encourage good student behaviour, handling conflicts and incidents promptly and reporting them according to school policy. • Be aware of and follow policies and procedures regarding child protection, equal opportunities, health and safety, security, confidentiality, data protection, and report any concerns to the relevant person. Support for Parents • Develop positive relationships with parents/carers. • Provide updates for families on their child’s progress. • Provide updates to the Learning Support Coordinator on the student’s progress. • Listen for any negative or inappropriate remarks in Vietnamese and inform the teacher. Support for the school • Attend staff meetings and other school events as requested by the Head Teacher. Take part in training, other learning activities, and performance development as necessary. • Share ideas and contribute to the school. • Contribute to the overall goals, work, and spirit of the team and school. Support for the cirriculumn • Participate in an evaluation process and professional development training designed to improve your performance in your position. • Provide learning activities to students within a structured supervision system, adjusting activities to suit students' responses/needs. • Use the students' IEPs effectively to support learning activities and build students’ competence and independence in using them.
