Master of Science (Advanced) in Astronomy and Astrophysics
Course Overview
The Master of Science (Advanced) in Astronomy & Astrophysics is a two-year program designed for students with a strong foundation in physics and mathematics. The program consists of 50% coursework and 50% research, offering a comprehensive exploration of topics such as stellar astrophysics, cosmology, and planetary science.
Students will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge astronomical instrumentation, analyze telescope data, and develop theoretical models to solve real-world astrophysical challenges. The curriculum is highly flexible, allowing students to customize their studies to align with their interests and career goals.
Throughout the program, students will acquire valuable skills in data analysis, programming, and project management—essential for careers both within and outside academia. In addition, students will engage in hands-on experiences such as:
• Conducting telescope observations and analyzing data
• Developing and testing astronomical instruments
• Writing reports and compiling results into a thesis
A key component of the program is the substantial research-based project, providing students with the opportunity to specialize in their chosen area of astrophysics. To progress to the research phase, students must achieve a minimum 70% average mark in the first 24 units of coursework and obtain supervisor approval for their research project.
