Course Overview
This is a research-based MPhil offered by the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics. It can be completed full-time over 9 months or part-time over up to 21 months. The program immerses students in advanced linguistics research through faculty supervision, research seminars, and active participation in the Language Sciences community.
What You'll Learn
Specialist knowledge: Build deep expertise in both theoretical and applied areas of linguistics—such as syntax, phonetics, semantics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and studies of specific language families—shaped by your chosen research focus.
Advanced research skills: Develop strong capabilities in designing research proposals, mastering appropriate methodologies, analyzing data or corpora, using linguistic software, and producing a substantial thesis of around 30,000 words.
Transferable academic skills: Strengthen your presentation, academic writing, time management, and independent research abilities through seminars, supervisions, and structured coursework.
